Accessibility statement
UK Grid is built to be usable by as many people as possible. This statement explains the current state and where we know we fall short. Andelle Labs is responsible for the accessibility of grid.andelle.uk.
What we target
We aim to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That target covers contrast, keyboard navigation, focus indicators, labelled interactive elements, dynamic content announcements, and the rest of the standard checklist.
What works well
- Keyboard navigation — tab order, focus rings, and Enter/Space activation are consistent across the dashboard
- Light and dark themes; theme is remembered between visits
- Live data updates use a stable layout (no shifting of cards as new values arrive)
- Text colour contrast is AA-compliant against both light and dark backgrounds
- Respects
prefers-reduced-motionfor the animated interconnector cables - No autoplay video or audio
Known limitations
We're honest about where the site isn't yet AA-compliant:
- Charts — Recharts time-series charts have keyboard tab targets on tooltips but no full screen-reader narration of the data series. Underlying numbers are accessible via the KPI cards above each chart.
- Regional choropleth map — the SVG map of 18 DNO regions is decorative; the same intensity data is presented in accessible tabular form in the trend chart below the map.
-
Information popovers — opened by an
ibutton on each card. They have keyboard activation and Esc-to-close, but the popover content scrolls inside its own container; some screen readers may not announce the opening as cleanly as a modal dialog would.
Reporting a problem
If something is hard to use, or just impossible — please email hello@andelle.co or open an issue on GitHub. Accessibility bug reports are treated as priority bugs.
Enforcement
If you're in the UK and unhappy with our response, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is the body responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. We're not a public sector body, so those regulations don't apply directly to us, but the standards we target are the same.
